The Government through the Ministry of Works and Transport has reintroduced mandatory vehicle inspection starting July 1st 2025 to curb the increasing road crashes in the country.
This has been disclosed by the Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala while addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala.
He confirmed that the inspection will be starting with Passenger Service Vehicles (PSVs) and as of now they are re-activating the inspection centres and training the inspectors who will do the inspection. He adds that this will help to identify vehicles in poor mechanical condition that are not roadworthy and fond of causing road accidents.
Gen. Katumba also disclosed that all suppliers of motorcycles are now required to sell a motorcycle with two helmets and for every motorcycle to be registered must have two International Safety Standards hence confirming that operations of arresting motorists without helmets will resume soon and in future they are going to charge both the motorcycle rider and the passenger for not wearing helmets.
The Traffic Police Spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura explained that there is need for all road users to be responsible and as police they are going to take serious disciplinary actions for traffic laws offenders.
He also notes that in some of the cases they will choose to hold offenders for 48 hours and take them to court because some of them have normalized paying fines of 200,000 shillings and the next day they repeat the same offense.
According to the 2024 Police Crime Report, road crashes increased from 23,608 in 2023 to 25,107 in 2024 and from the total reported cases to police, 4,434 were fatal, 1,314 were serious and 7,539 were minor.
