At least 25 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), including two Members of Parliament, are currently detained at Wandegeya Police Station facing various charges.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed that MPs Derrick Nyeko (Makindye East) and Muwadda Nkunyingi (Kyadondo East) were among those arrested during clashes at NUP offices in Makerere Kavule on Monday.
The confrontations arose as NUP supporters, led by party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, and were en route to a rally for Elias Nalukoola, the NUP candidate in the Kawempe North by-election.
Violence erupted, resulting in police deploying tear gas and physically assaulting some supporters.
This incident follows earlier confrontations earlier in the week, where NUP supporters and their candidate faced violence shortly after his nomination.
According to police, the supporters and leaders allegedly obstructed traffic, engaged in malicious damage, and created a common nuisance, which prompted security intervention.
Owoyesigyire noted that the group, some clad in red overalls and NUP-branded attire, disrupted road traffic and allegedly threw stones at passing vehicles, continuing their actions despite police warnings.
Several vehicles were impounded, and items like NUP-branded clothing were confiscated.
Ongoing investigations at Wandegeya Police Station are expected to culminate in charges being prepared for submission to the Resident State Attorney.
In response, NUP General Secretary David Lewis Lubongoya reported that many supporters were arrested violently, with some sustaining serious injuries.
