The China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE), the contractor responsible for the Isimba Hydropower Dam, has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing structural defects following high-level engagements with the Ugandan government.
Supervising engineers, Artelia and KKatt Consults, identified critical defects in the dam’s spillway, which could compromise its integrity. The 183-megawatt dam is a key asset in Uganda’s energy sector.
After discussions with stakeholders, including the Ministry of Energy, the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources, and Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGCL), CWE has committed to rehabilitating the spillway starting this month, with completion expected within a year.
Herbert Ariko, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources, confirmed that all parties have agreed on a structured repair plan, which includes implementing a new insurance cover to mitigate risks.
During a press briefing at Parliament, Professor Wanga Yongtian, Vice President of CWE, assured the public that the contractor is ready to begin urgent rehabilitation work.
State Minister for Energy, Okaasai Opolot, reassured Ugandans that the $150 million repair plan will ensure the dam is fully operational within the next year.
