A devastating fire has engulfed a seven-story building housing Sun Rise Hotel along Rashid Khamisi Road in the city center, leaving behind destruction and suspected loss of life.
The fire reportedly started around 10:00 AM in the basement shops of Sunshine Building, near Namayiba Bus Park and the Swarayan Indian worship center in Old Kampala.
Preliminary reports suggest that the blaze was caused by improper mixing of chemical materials stored in one of the shops.
Vincent Segayi, Defense Secretary of Namayiba Park, witnessed the incident and confirmed that one body had been recovered, while several others remained trapped inside.
Eyewitnesses reported that many hotel guests were still inside rooms on the top four floors of the building.
By the time of publishing, the Uganda Police Fire Department was still battling the flames as rescue efforts continued.
