Uganda flags off 2.2million Malaria Vaccine doses for nationwide rollout

Health Minister Dr. Jane Aceng

The Ministry of Health has officially begun distributing 2.278 million doses of the malaria vaccine to 105 districts with high and moderate malaria transmission rates. This marks the first phase of Uganda’s historic malaria vaccination program, set to launch in April.

The current batch is part of a larger 3.5 million-dose consignment, with plans to expand the rollout to other parts of the country in later phases.

The vaccine targets children under two years old, who are most vulnerable to severe malaria. It will be administered in four dosesat 6, 7, 8, and 18 months to provide optimal protection.

Health Minister Dr. Jane Aceng, speaking at the official flag-off on Friday, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening disease prevention and building resilient health systems.

The long-term goal is to integrate the malaria vaccine into routine immunization services.

The vaccine procurement and delivery were facilitated by UNICEF, which pledged continued support for child health initiatives in Uganda.

Uganda joins 17 other African countries in implementing the malaria vaccine as part of routine immunization, marking a major step in the fight against one of Africa’s deadliest diseases.
