The High Court in Kampala has scheduled April 11 to deliver its ruling on the bail application filed by opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajji Obeid Lutaale Kamulegeya.
Besigye and Lutaale, who have been in Luzira prison for over three months, appeared before Lady Justice Rosette Kania Comfort of the Criminal Division today.
The judge directed both the defense and prosecution to file their written submissions by March 31 before she delivers her decision on the set date.
Initially, the bail application was set to be heard today, but Chief State Attorneys Richard Birivumbuka and Joseph Kyomuhendo, representing the prosecution, requested more time.
They argued that they had just received affidavits supporting Besigye’s application, which raised serious issues that required a thorough review before responding.
Justice Kania granted them time to file their response by next Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the court allowed the defense, led by lawyers Ernest Kalibala and Erias Lukwago, to proceed with presenting sureties for Besigye and Lutaale.
Among those standing surety for Besigye are his longtime allies and legislators: Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Bukonzo East MP Tonny Muhindo, Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye, and Kabale Municipality MP Nicholas Kamara.
The decision on their bail now awaits the court’s ruling on April 11.
