Experts warn that Uganda’s agricultural sector faces significant challenges primarily due to inefficient farming practices.
Despite government initiatives to support farmers, the sector’s vast potential remains largely untapped.
Dr. Kayuki Kaizzi, a soil scientist at the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), identified poor farming methods as a major barrier to effective fertilizer use.
He called for farmers to adopt more sustainable practices to maximize the benefits of fertilizers.
The Ministry of Agriculture is currently engaging stakeholders in Kampala to develop a soil health action plan and promote domestic fertilizers.
However, experts caution that simply increasing access to fertilizers may not be adequate to transform the sector.
By placing a greater emphasis on sustainable farming and soil health, Uganda has the potential to enhance agricultural productivity and secure a brighter future for its farmers.
