The Banyarwanda community, under their umbrella body UMUBANO, has vowed to oppose President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the 2026 general elections if he does not issue an executive order granting them citizenship.
Speaking at a press conference in Kampala, UMUBANO’s national legal advisor, Frederick Mukasa Mbidde, expressed disappointment with the existing laws, arguing that they fail to grant citizenship to Banyarwanda born in Uganda.
Mbidde also criticized President Museveni’s January 2025 Executive Order, which was intended to streamline passport applications and clarify citizenship issues.
He pointed out that the order still excludes Banyarwanda born in Uganda from automatic citizenship, leaving them in legal limbo.
Meanwhile, UMUBANO Chairperson Simon Kayitana emphasized that the Banyarwanda community considers Uganda theironly home.
He condemned the proposed order as a violation of their rights and called on President Museveni to amend it to ensure full recognition of their citizenship.
