Kamwenge District lifts quarantine on livestock markets after successfully containing Foot and Mouth Disease

Livestock markets in Kamwenge District ban has been lifted

Kamwenge District Local Government has lifted the quarantine on livestock markets after successfully containing the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

In a communication from Hanny Turya-hebwa, the District Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), sent to sub-county chiefs, town clerks, and LC III chairpersons, the district announced the reopening of all livestock markets.

This move follows months of extensive vaccination campaigns and strict restrictions on animal movements, which have been effective in containing the disease.

The FMD outbreak had significantly disrupted livestock farming and trading in Kamwenge and neighboring districts, causing a slowdown in the agricultural economy.

While the quarantine has been lifted, district authorities have called for continued vigilance to prevent future outbreaks and to uphold high animal health standards.
