EAC, SADC Leaders endorse roadmap for peace

Leaders of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have directed the adoption and implementation of a comprehensive report and roadmap aimed at addressing the security situation in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This resolution was reached during a Virtual Joint Summit of the Heads of State and Government of EAC and SADC, co-chaired by President William Ruto of Kenya, Chairperson of the EAC, and President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, Chairperson of SADC.

The leaders reaffirmed key decisions made at the 1st Joint EAC-SADC Summit on February 8, 2025, in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

They also referenced resolutions from the 1261st African Union Peace and Security Council meeting on February 14, 2025, and UN Security Council Resolution 2773 on February 21, 2025.

These resolutions underscored the need for a unified and urgent approach to addressing the escalating insecurity in Eastern DRC.

The Joint Summit formally adopted a detailed roadmap outlining immediate, medium, and long-term measures to achieve sustainable peace and security in the region.

Meanwhile, more than 1,771 Congolese refugees, primarily women, children, and the elderly, have arrived at the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Kikuube District after undergoing security and health screenings.

They fled ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC.
