Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, the Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe division in Masaka City, has accused the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) of hindering the country’s chance for meaningful electoral reforms.
Mpuuga criticized the NUP’s opposition to proposed Constitutional and Electoral reforms, arguing that this stance obstructed efforts to achieve a free and fair election process.
As the leading opposition party, Mpuuga believes NUP had a significant opportunity to champion logical amendments to the election laws ahead of the next electoral cycle.
However, he claims the party’s internal conflicts and petty squabbles led to a missed opportunity, ultimately resulting in his loss of the Leader of the Opposition position in Parliament in 2023.
Mpuuga also emphasized that NUP’s actions discouraged Ugandans from placing their hopes in any meaningful legislative reforms under President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
Currently mobilizing under a new political formation, the Democratic Alliance (DA), Mpuuga urged women council leaders in Masaka not to lose hope or momentum.
He encouraged them to recommit to the political cause, ensuring that their efforts for political transition would not go to waste.
