The opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has appealed to the government, Red Cross, and the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide immediate relief to families affected by the recent heavy downpours.
During a press conference at the party headquarters in Kampala, the UPC Spokesperson Sharon Arch Oyat reported widespread damage, including collapsed houses, bridges, and flooded roads.
Traffic was paralyzed along Gulu Highway due to flooding, with long queues from Maganjo to Matugga. Similar flooding issues were also reported in areas like Bwayise, Masanafu, and Kabowa.
Tragically, two juveniles in Bukoto, Kampala, were found dead after their home was flooded while their mother was away.
Oyat urged the government to protect the environment, focusing on preserving swamps, supporting re-afforestation, and protecting water bodies.
She stressed the need for improved waste management to prevent blockages and flooding.
The UPC called for urgent attention to address these challenges and protect lives from the devastating impacts of climate change and poor infrastructure.
