The Buganda Land Board (BLB) has refuted allegations by the Federation of Kampala Hawkers and Vendors Association (FHVA) that it is deliberately obstructing the Ugandan government’s efforts to acquire land in Kisenyi for hawkers and vendors.
The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) had committed USh360 billion to purchase 10 acres of land from businessman John Bosco Muwonge as part of the Smart City Initiative, aimed at relocating street vendors.
However, the transaction has stalled due to unresolved ground rent (Busuulu) payments to BLB.
Following the delay, Muwonge fenced off the land, preventing vendors from accessing it.
This action sparked outrage, leading vendors to remove the fence and threaten further action if the deadlock is not resolved.
Speaking on behalf of BLB, Moses Kizito Gambobi dismissed claims that BLB was obstructing the sale.
Instead, he stated that Muwonge has not cleared his ground rent dues, which is a prerequisite for the government to proceed with the payment.
Kizito reaffirmed BLB’s willingness to facilitate the sale and urged vendors to direct their grievances to the rightful parties.
Meanwhile, Richard Lubega, chairperson of FHVA, vowed that vendors would fight for the land, even if it means sacrificing their lives, emphasizing their desperation for a permanent marketplace.
With tensions rising, all parties are under pressure to find a resolution that will allow the vendors to relocate without further conflict.
