FDC criticizes UPDF deployment in South Sudan, questions Uganda’s role in conflict

FDC Deputy President Hassan Kaps Fungaroo

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has strongly opposed the deployment of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in South Sudan, arguing that this move portrays Uganda as a party to the ongoing conflict in its 14-year-old neighboring country.

The deployment, which took place in March 2025, was in response to rising tensions in South Sudan, with Ugandan forces sent to support President Salva Kiir’s government.

Addressing the media on Monday at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi, FDC Deputy President Hassan Kaps Fungaroo condemned the deployment and urged South Sudanese citizens to support the full and proper implementation of the 2018 peace agreement, which was designed to end the country’s civil war that began in 2013.

Fungaroo also appealed to the people of South Sudan not to target Ugandans working in their country as a result of the UPDF presence.

Additionally, he questioned the Ugandan government’s transparency on the funding of this military operation, demanding accountability for the costs associated with the deployment.
