Kyagulanyi to Opposition MPs: Tackle corruption from within Parliament

President of NUP Robert Kyagulanyi

The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi, has called on fellow opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) to take a firm stand against corruption, starting with accountability within Parliament itself.

Kyagulanyi’s remarks come amid growing concerns over high-profile corruption scandals, including the theft of iron sheets meant for the people of Karamoja, a case that implicated Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and other Ministers.

He also pointed to the abuse of service awards, which has further fueled public discontent and skepticism toward the current leadership.

Speaking during the presentation of the opposition’s alternative budget for the 2025/26 financial year at Parliament, Kyagulanyi urged his colleagues to stay vigilant and resist any attempts to compromise their integrity, warning that political tricks and tactics often derail leaders from effectively serving the Ugandan people.

He emphasized that fighting corruption must be a top priority especially in light of the massive financial losses Uganda suffers each year due to corruption.

According to the Inspector General of Government (IGG), the country loses nearly 10 trillion shillings annually to fraudulent dealings.

Kyagulanyi also called for an end to what he termed the sanitization of public theft, insisting that corruption must be confronted head-on without excuses, justification, or efforts to whitewash the misuse of public funds.
