NRM mobilization in Buganda gains momentum as Museveni pardons illegal fishing culprits

NRM for Buganda

As part of efforts to regain political ground in Buganda, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is intensifying its mobilization efforts, with key government figures engaging communities on development programs.

During the ‘NRM for Buganda’ rally held on Sunday in Kyotera District, State Minister for Microfinance Kyeyune Haruna Kasolo and other government officials addressed locals, emphasizing the party’s commitment to development and correcting what they termed as opposition misinformation.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement by Colonel Mercy Tukahirwa, Commandant of the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU), confirming that President Yoweri Museveni had ordered the release of boats, vehicles, and fishing gear seized in illegal fishing operations.

This move follows multiple appeals from leaders and is seen as an effort to win back support among fishing communities, a key voting bloc.

While the President’s directive grants amnesty to those previously arrested, Minister Kasolo warned fishermen against reverting to illegal practices, noting that Museveni has not yet ordered the withdrawal of the FPU from lakes and landing sites.

In addition to discussing fisheries policies, Ministers and MPs at the rally used the platform to highlight government achievements and future projects in Buganda, aiming to dispel opposition claims and rebuild NRM’s influence in the region following setbacks in the last general elections.

With the 2026 elections approaching, the NRM’s renewed engagement in Buganda signals a strategic push to reclaim voter confidence through policy adjustments and direct community interactions.
