Minister Norbert Mao seeks Parliament’s approval to repatriate jailed Ugandans

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, has announced that he is in the final stages of tabling a gazette before Parliament, seeking consent to bring back jailed Ugandans Sulaiman Kidandala and Justice Lydia Mugambe to serve their sentences in Uganda.

Speaking to journalists at the Democratic Party (DP) offices on Balintuma Road, Mengo, Mao emphasized that his efforts aim to ensure that all Ugandans receive justice, regardless of where they are convicted.

He noted that while the individuals will still serve their sentences, the key difference will be that they will do so at home, closer to their families.

Sulaiman Kidandala, the former contestant for Kawempe North Member of Parliament is currently serving a six-year sentence in South Korea for human trafficking.

Meanwhile, Ugandan High Court judge Lydia Mugambe, who was convicted of immigration and modern slavery offences in Oxfordshire, UK, is awaiting sentencing on May 2 following an investigation by Thames Valley Police.

Mao’s proposal will require Parliament’s approval before any repatriation arrangements can be made.

If successful, this could set a precedent for future cases involving Ugandans serving sentences abroad.
