Mulago Hospital seeks for Shs 6Bn to train Organ Transplant Specialists

Executive Director Mulago Hospital Rosemary Byanyima

Mulago National Referral Hospital is seeking 5.5 billion shillings to train specialists for its Organ Transplant Unit.

During the presentation of the ministerial policy statement, the Executive Director Mulago Hospital Rosemary Byanyima, urged Parliament’s Health Committee to allocate these funds in the 2025-2026 budget, citing the growing demand for organ transplants.

Byanyima highlighted the disparity between the funds requested and those actually allocated saying last financial year, Mulago received only 1.5 billion shillings out of the 10 billion shillings it had requested, jeopardizing the availability of specialized medicine, equipment, and trained personnel necessary for the unit.

The ED further stressed the urgent need for increased funding to cover utility bills, such as water and electricity, to ensure the hospital’s smooth operation.

However, committee members were concerned about the hospital’s One billion-shilling water bill, citing potential mismanagement and called for a special audit into the expenditures.
