Politicians must protect supporters against HIV/AIDS- Katikiro Mayiga

Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga and National Unity Platform Leaders

The Buganda Kingdom has made a passionate appeal to political leader to guide their supporters to protect themselves from acquiring HIV/AIDS most especially during campaigning periods. 

The call was made by the  Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga at Bulange Mengo Kampala, during the visit of the opposition Party the National Unity Platform (NUP) Leaders where they bought the Kabaka’s birthday run kits worth Ugx 15 Million.

Mayiga says during political rallies supporters both men and women get excited and end up involving in acts which expose them to contracting HIV/AIDs which is still a killer disease.

An estimated 1.4 million people are living with HIV in Uganda. While there’s been progress in reducing new infections and AIDS-related deaths, the epidemic remains a major public health issue, particularly impacting women and young people.

Katikiro Mayiga emphasized the role taken by men to control and prevent the transmission of the disease and urged them to be more proactive in promoting safe practices, to end HIV/AIDS by 2030.

Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition in parliament Joel Ssenyonyi who led the NUP team to applauded Buganda kingdom for the initiatives taken to solicit for funds to address challenges associated with HIV/AIDS infection including sensation of the public about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and how it can be eliminated.

Among other NUP leaders who escorted LoP were; the party Secreatary General Lewis Lubongoya, Rubaga North MP Abubker Kawalya, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi the Party Vice President Buganda Region, Newly elected Kawempe North MP Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola among others.

This Sunday 6th April during the Kabaka Mutebi II, 70th birthday, supporters, well-wishers and sympathizers of Buganda Kingdom will involve in the annual Kabaka’s birthday run under the  theme; “Men for good health to save the Girl child” This year’s run is dedicated towards ensuring the country ends AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
