The Democratic Party (DP) has condemned the National Electoral Commission (EC) for instructing political parties to establish committees to vet candidates for upcoming elections.
According to DP Spokesperson Opio Okoler, this move undermines the autonomy of political parties and interferes with their internal processes.
The EC’s decision requires parties to appoint a person to approve aspiring candidates on their ticket, working closely with the Commission.
Okoler argues that this oversteps the EC’s authority, as vetting candidates typically falls under the purview of party Secretary Generals.
The DP emphasizes its commitment to democratic principles and party autonomy, stressing that political parties should have the freedom to select their candidates without external interference.
Meanwhile, the DP’s internal registration process is progressing well, with village-level registration reaching 70% completion.
The party expects to finalize the process soon and has urged members to continue embracing the exercise.
