The Opposition party, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), has condemned the government for the alleged misuse of taxpayer money on unproductive ventures.
This follows rumours of a cash bonanza within Parliament, where members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and a few opposition legislators are said to have received Shs100 million each, purportedly as a reward for their support of the recently passed Coffee Bill and an upcoming bill proposing amendments to the UPDF Act 2005, which aims to allow civilians to be tried in the Court Martial.
Parliamentary Spokesperson Chris Obore has dismissed these claims as mere allegations without proof, stating that such a scenario will never occur.
At a press conference held at the UPC party headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday, party Spokesperson Sharon Arach Oyat expressed her dismay, stating that it is painful to witness such a significant amount of taxpayer money wasted while Ugandans suffer from inadequate public infrastructure, including poor roads, hospitals, and schools.
Arach urged voters to scrutinize the Members of Parliament who are allegedly benefiting from these illicit gains as they campaign for the 2026 general elections for the 12th Parliamentary members.
Additionally, during the same press conference, Arach criticized the independent national Electoral Commission (EC) for failing to educate the public on electoral matters, emphasizing that as elections approach, voters are uncertain about what actions to take.
