UPDF Act amendments proposed to align with Supreme Court ruling

Minister for ICT and National Guidance Dr. Chris Baryomunsi

The Ugandan government, through the Ministry of Defense, is set to present new amendments to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Act 2005 before parliament.

These amendments aim to align with the Supreme Court’s ruling, ensuring justice and credibility in military courts.

The proposed changes include restricting court martial, requiring legal qualifications for members, and allowing appeals to civilian courts.

According to Minister for ICT and National Guidance Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, these amendments are designed to ensure justice and credibility in military courts.

The Supreme Court’s January 31, 2025, ruling emphasized the need for legal training for court martial members to ensure justice.

Dr. Baryomunsi also condemned misinterpretations by the media, advising them to read the full article of the Supreme Court ruling for accurate reporting.

The government aims to balance military discipline and civilian judicial oversight through these amendments.
