NRM unveils roadmap for 2026 general elections primaries

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially released its roadmap for the party primaries leading up to the 2026 general elections.

The timeline runs from April to August 2025, culminating in a delegates’ conference scheduled for August 22-25, 2025.

According to the roadmap, the nomination period for Members of Parliament will take place from June 17 to June 30, followed by a campaign period from July 1 to July 14, with polling set for July 16, 2025.

The electoral activities will commence on April 24, 2025, with expressions of interest and the nomination of NRM candidates at the village level taking place from April 24 to April 30.

Campaign activities at the village level are scheduled for May 1 to May 5, with polling day marked for May 6, 2025.

At the launch of this roadmap at the NRM secretariat, the party’s Secretary General, Richard Todwong, confirmed that approximately 19.7 million NRM voters are expected to participate in the party primary elections.

He urged all members to engage actively in this electoral process.

Furthermore, Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the party’s electoral commission, along with commission member Ambassador James Kinobe, detailed the nomination fees for various positions in the party primaries.

Candidates vying for the presidency will need to pay Shs20 million, while those contesting for Parliament must pay Shs3 million.

Other fees include Shs1.5 million for Lord Mayorship and Shs500,000 for city councilors.

Individuals seeking top leadership positions within the party structures will also face specific nomination fees.

A candidate for party chairperson will be required to pay Shs20 million, while the first vice chairperson will need to pay Shs10 million.

The second vice chairperson, who must be female, is also subject to a Shs10 million fee, and vice chairpersons representing various regions will need to pay Shs5 million.

Those competing for various party leagues will also pay Shs 1 million, among other amounts.

Kinobe explained that all contestants will be required to deposit their nomination fees at Centenary Bank, Lugogo branch, and present bank slips to the party’s electoral commission for official nomination.
