MPs challenge Shs3.1bn allocation to NFA over allegations of forest mismanagement

Godfrey Onzima, the MP for Aringa North

A faction of Members of Parliament has raised concerns regarding the proposed funding of Shs3.1 billion for the National Forestry Authority (NFA), accusing the agency of complicity in the ongoing degradation of Uganda’s natural forests.

Godfrey Onzima, the MP for Aringa North, expressed strong criticism of the NFA, claiming that some officials have intentionally permitted forest destruction.

He questioned the agency’s request for substantial taxpayer funding for reforestation efforts while allegedly neglecting their responsibility to protect the forests.

Onzima emphasized that forest degradation has occurred under the NFA’s supervision, casting doubt on the agency’s credibility.

The Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources previously included the Shs3.1 billion request for the NFA in its recent report, but the controversy surrounding the agency now raises uncertainties about the approval of the funds.
