Over Nine Universities confirm participation in 4th Eastern Africa Women’s University games at Makerere University

The fourth edition of the Eastern Africa Women’s University Games is set to take place at Makerere University, with participation from over nine universities across the region.

This year’s games will include a variety of sports such as netball, football, handball, volleyball, swimming, basketball, chess, tennis, badminton, athletics, scrabble, and goalball.

More than 450 female participants are expected, marking a significant rise in female involvement in university sports.

The theme for this edition is “Accelerating Gender Equality and Empowerment in University Sports,” which underscores the commitment to enhancing women’s participation and leadership in athletics.

The president of the Eastern Africa Women’s University Games has expressed confidence in the preparations for the event, highlighting the continuous improvement in participation rates among female athletes.

The General Secretary of the games, who also serves as the Assistant Dean in charge of sports at Makerere University, Brian Miiro Nsubuga noted that the host institution has made thorough preparations and has assembled strong teams to represent them in the competition.

This increased level of female participation is seen as a positive development for the organizers.

The initiative aims to go beyond just winning medals; it also focuses on building confidence in women through sports and preparing them for leadership positions in the future.

Participating universities include Makerere University, United States International University Africa, Mountains of the Moon, Kisii University, Daystar University, Kabale University, Kumi University, Bishop Stewart University, and the Makerere Business School (MUBS).

The United States International University Africa comes into the competition as the defending champion, making this year’s event highly anticipated.
