Archbishop Kaziimba initiates Pension fund for clergy in Anglican Church

Archbishop Kaziimba

The Archbishop of Church of Uganda Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting retired clergy who have long served the Church with devotion, yet now face difficult living conditions in their later years.

The proposed Pension Care Fund will focus on improving the welfare of retired church servants within the Kampala Diocese, ensuring they live out their remaining years with dignity and support.

This initiative seeks to address a persistent challenge within the Church of Uganda despite the retirement policy introduced in 2010.

The 2020 study revealed serious gaps in its implementation showing that dioceses often administer retirement benefits irregularly and inconsistently, with the policy contributing only 22% toward effective support.

Archbishop Kaziimba emphasized that the fund will not only serve immediate needs but also set a precedent for a sustainable, structured system of care for clergy in retirement.

He noted similar efforts which are already underway in other parts of the Church, notably, the Mukono Diocese which launched the project to construct a clergy pension house, estimated to cost over 3 billion Ugandan shillings.

As part of their model, children of clergy are encouraged to contribute financially toward their parents’ welfare.
