Catholic Community in Uganda mourns Pope Francis’ death

Rt. Rev. Bishop Serverus Jjumba

The Catholic community in Uganda is in mourning following the death of Pope Francis.

His passing was announced yesterday around 11:00 AM East African Standard Time, though he had already been declared dead at 7:35 AM in Rome.

Pope Francis, 88, died from a stroke and subsequent heart failure at his apartment in Casa Santa Marta on Monday, April 21, 2025, coinciding with the celebration of Easter Monday, according to the Vatican.

The Uganda Episcopal Conference has not yet released the official program for memorial masses to pray for the soul of the late Pope.

However, the Masaka diocese, under the leadership of Rt. Rev. Bishop Serverus Jjumba, has encouraged all parishes to hold special masses in honor of Pope Francis.

Additionally, a high mass is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Kitovu Cathedral at 4 PM, where the diocese will collectively pray for the late pontiff.
