The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has started collecting garbage that had accumulated on the streets and market places within Kampala City following the recent collapse of the Kiteezi landfill in Kawempe division that claimed lives and property.

LORD MAYOR Erias Lukwago, kick started the efforts on Wednesday at St. Balikudembe Market commonly known as Owino promising to have the hips of garbage within Kampala be cleared within the next ten days, beginning with the Central Business District and City Markets.

He said KCCA is undertaking procurement processes to acquire land on which a modern garbage recycling plant will be constructed and used this chance to ask the team currently scrutinizing those who expressed interest to provide land in a bidding process to expedite the process.

The Kampala City Authorities have faced challenges with Garbage collection following the closure of Kiteezi Landfill site, with neighboring local authorities staying reluctant to provide alternative dump sites for the garbage transported from Kampala.

The exercise was attended by Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, City Executive Secretaries, Technical Staff and other Local Leaders amongst others.

Police reports that the Kiteezi garbage landfill tragedy left 35 people dead, 12 of these were juveniles and that 11 people are still missing.
