Court releases women who protested naked at parliament

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court in Kampala has released the three women who stripped naked in a protest against corruption at Parliament.

Norah Kobusingye, Praise Aloikin Opoloje, and Kemitoma Kyenziibo  who were  arrested by police at Parliament on Monday last week have been re-arraigned before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate, Ronald Kayizzi and granted them a one million shillings non cash bail and their sureties bonded at 2 million shillings each.

These women are battling charges of being a common nuisance contrary to section 148(1) of the Penal Code Act.

Before their release, the State Attorney Ivan Kyazze asked the court to impose hash conditions on them so that they never involve themselves in such acts.

The matter has been adjourned to October 1st 2024.

Prosecution alleges that on September 2nd, 2024, at Parliamentary Avenue, the trio with others still at large, staged a protest in the middle of the road while partially dressed and with messages written on their bodies calling for the stopping of corruption in Parliament.

The protestors, who were demonstrating against corruption in Parliament, stripped off their clothes as a form of protest, immediately drawing attention from passers-by and security personnel.

Some of the messages demanded accountability from the Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) concerning the recent tragedy at the Kiteezi landfill.

Security operatives quickly intervened to contain the situation, arresting the protestors and transporting them to an undisclosed location.
