heavy rains

Heavy rains accompanied by windstorms have claimed two lives in Kakinga Town Council, Bunyangabu District.

The storm also destroyed over 20 houses and several properties.

The deceased have been identified as Tumwakire Kerine, from Lubalika B Cell in Kakinga Town Council, and Ivan Musinguzi, a casual worker from Rubirizi District. Both died after being struck by debris from collapsing buildings.

James Ategeka, the Bunyangabu District LC V Chairperson, reported that more than 100 households in Kakinga Town Council were affected, with over 50 acres of banana plantations destroyed.

He expressed concern that, with agriculture being the primary livelihood for most residents, many families will struggle to raise school fees as the new term approaches.

Remigious Turyahebwa, the Kakinga Town Council LCIII Chairperson, called on the government, through the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness, to provide relief assistance.
