Five activists have been arrested in Kampala over protests against the destruction of the Lwera wetland.
The group was intercepted by the Police around Kitgum House at the Jinja Road traffic lights. The group had also organized a march to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) offices.
The activists from the Weka-Afri Sustainable Biodiversity and Food Security Foundation who held placards and were chanting slogans to express their discontent with NEMA’s inaction on preserving wetlands in the country.
Raymond Bintukwanga, a protester, criticized NEMA for not fulfilling its constitutional mandate to protect the environment, citing the destruction of Lwera wetland by Chinese rice cultivators.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango has identified the activists as; Raymond Bintukwanga, Hannington Ahimbisibwe, Nuluyart Nakyejwe, Phionah Nalusiba and Proscovia Nampijja who are being held over common nuisance.
They are currently being held at the Kampala Central Police Station and are expected to appear in court after investigations in their matter are concluded.
