EALA Asked to Streamline Regional Legislations

Speaker-Anita-Among

The Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament Anita Annet Among has called on the East Africa Community member states to support regional legislations on Standards of Goods, Anti Female Genital Mutilation, Accreditations and the Conformity Bill to have an equal regional legislation regime.

Among notes that the East Africa Regional Assembly as a regional body will have impact if its deliberations on laws is harnessed in respective member states’ legislative frameworks.

She has further asked respective member states ministers to take up this task through their Regional Council of Ministers.

During the ongoing East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) sittings at Parliament in Kampala, Among also warned East Africa Community member states against in-fighting amongst themselves that it will cripple their efforts for unity and development, citing the failure to achieve the tenets ofintegration that is aimed at achieving political federation.

She adds that the regional peace and reconciliation initiatives should be expedited in cases of misunderstandings to ensure that no conflicts arise among regional member states.

EALA has been holding its plenary sittings in Uganda’s Parliament from October 20th and will conclude on November 12th 2024 as part of its legislative culture of holding sittings in different East African Community (EAC) member states with the aim to strengthen regional ties, facilitate cooperation, and promote economic integration.
