The Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda has challenged women human rights defenders to have it in mind that the rights of women cannot be defended by them only but by the public and other stakeholders.
Nnaabagereka made the remarks while giving a keynote address at the 7th Annual Women’s Human Rights Defenders Conference 2024 held at the Golf Course Hotel in Kampala.
She also noted that investing in the health and education for women can play a key role in uplifting women and girls since they are beacons in defending and promoting women’s lives.
Nagginda also stressed the need to invest in capacity building programs and training of women as well as making policies that are inclusive.
Dr. Zahara Nampeewo, the Deputy Principal for the Makerere University School of Law noted that there is a need to integrate culture in the fight for women’s rights.
Meanwhile, Maria Kaddu, a representative from Women Human Rights Defenders noted that there is a need to stand for women human rights defenders and also empower them because many are facing several challenges.
Kaddu called upon the Government to create civic space that will enable women human Rights defenders to work without fear.
Kirstine Primdal Sutton, the team leader at the Royal Danish Embassy noted that there is a need for women rights defenders to remain united in fighting against inequalities in human rights.
