The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has suspended the routine visits to inmates by members of the public during the upcoming festive season.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Prisons Spokesperson, Frank Baine said the visitation of prisoners will stop from December 24th 2024 and will resume on January 3rd 2025.
UPS currently has over 60,000 inmates in their custody in the various prisons across the country.
Baine says they remain committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all prisoners, staff and the public.
Meanwhile, the Service has declared a Standby Class One period for its entire staff, effective December 16th 2024 to January 18th 2025.
Baine explains that this is to strengthen and enhance prison safety, intelligence, and coordination with other security agencies, remaining vigilant and alert.
