Kawempe North MP Ssegirinya to be Buried on Sunday

Kawempe North MP Ssegirinya

The Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya will be buried on Sunday January 12th 2025, according to the burial program released by his party; the National Unity Platform (NUP) on Thursday afternoon.

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, the NUP President while at Lubaga Hospital before the Ssegirinya’s body was transferred away, noted that Ssegirinya’s family has agreed with the Muslim leaders to allow the late MP’s siblings living abroad to fly into the country for his burial.

Kyagulanyi says that the tentative burial program indicates that a vigil will be held at the NUP headquarters at Makerere-Kavule, Kawempe division, Kampala on Thursday and on Friday Ssegirinya’s remains will be taken to Parliament for his colleagues to pay their last respects during a special sitting in the morning and later in the afternoon they will be taken to Kawempe Mbogo Mosque for prayers and in the evening another vigil will be held at his home in Kasangati, Wakiso district.

Then on Saturday, the body will be transported to Butale, Kaddugala in Masaka district where the burial will take place on Sunday as Kyagulanyi explained.

This followed the confirmation of Ssegirinya’s passing on Thursday afternoon by the Uganda Martyrs Hospital Lubaga where he was being treated after conflicting reports on his health earlier in the daywhich were dispelled by the Hospital’s acting Medical Director, Sr. Dr. Grace Nannyondo who revealed that the MP was brain-dead but in critical condition.

A statement signed by the Hospital Management indicated that Ssegirinya breathed his last at 12.10 pm.

Ssegirinya has been battling a serious illness since his release from prison after serving 15 months on charges related to the Masaka machete killings of 2021.

The MP, who was jailed alongside Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana, experienced rapid health deterioration, which led to hospitalizations in Uganda, the Netherlands and Kenya.

Known by the moniker ‘Mr. Update’, Ssegirinya gained attention through consistent phone calls to radio political shows and his active participation in protests against the regime’s excesses.

His advocacy earned him a Councilor position for Kawempe North in the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Council on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket. He later joined the People Power Movement, which transformed into the NUP, under the leadership of Robert Kyagulanyi.

The late Ssegirinya born in 1988, served as Lord Councilor from 2016-2021 and later elevated to the seat of Kawempe North MP in the 2021 elections.
