Deputy Speaker Orders House Human Rights Committee to Visit Besigye in Prison

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa has directed the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights to visit opposition leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye at Luzira Prison on Friday.

This follows mounting pressure from the Opposition Members of Parliament who claim that Besigye’s human rights and welfare are being violated in prison.

The Opposition MPs allege that Besigye is being caged and that visitors are restricted from accessing him physically.

They also claim that even those wishing to take him food have been refused and also limited to using prison cell phones to talk to him.

The MPs have also criticized their NRM counterparts for failing to speak against the violations of Ugandans’ rights perpetuated by the Government security agencies.

In response, Deputy Speaker Tayebwa requested the Government to present a report to the House on Besigye’s condition in Luzira Prison by next Tuesday through the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Office of the Attorney General.
