The Independent Electoral Commission has confirmed 13th March 2025 as the polling day for the by-election for Kawempe North Member of Parliament seat and the for the Kazo-Angola A City Division Councilor seat.
This has been confirmed by the Chairperson of the Commission Justice Simon Byabakama while releasing the electoral roadmap to various stakeholders at Tick Hotel in Kawempe North.
He indicated that the update of the voters’ register for Kawempe North kicked off on Monday and will run until January 31st, the display of the voters’ register will start from February 10th-19th, the nomination of candidates will be done on February 26th and 27th and the campaigns will run from February 28th – March 11th and the election date will be March 13th 2025.
The Kawempe North seat fell vacant following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9th 2025.
Article 3 of the Parliamentary Elections Act 2005 directs the Electoral Commission to organize a by-election within a period of 60 days and it’s against this that Byabakama called upon voters in Kawempe to participate in the process within the stipulated period since it will run across the 197 polling stations in the nine parishes that make up Kawempe North constituency.
Meanwhile, Byabakama also disclosed that the City Division Councilor for Kazo-Angola Ward by-election will be held on the same date of March 13th across the eight parishes that make up the electoral area.
The Kazo-Angola Ward City Councilor seat fell vacant following the death of the then Councilor, Yusuf Yakubu Kiggundu in an accident in 2022 while heading to Omoro district to campaign for the NUP candidate in a by-election that had been organized in the area.
Byabakama meanwhile called for peace from all stakeholders throughout this by-election.
