The Government of Uganda has called for peace talks through negotiations between the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame and his counterpart of Democratic Republic of Congo Felix Tshisekedi to ensure that the ongoing fight in Goma city in eastern DRC ends.
The call has been made by the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi saying that one of the factors that is causing the fight is the contestation of tribal and ethnic extractions where some with Rwanda-Burundi originality are fighting with the DRC army.
Baryomunsi however says as the country they are ready to support all refugees who continue running for safety from DRC as they scrutinize all those who enter the country such that they don’t spread diseases from their countries to Uganda.
Meanwhile, the deputy UPDF Spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki revealed that the ongoing fight in DRC hasn’t affected their ongoing Operation Shujaa that is intended to fight the Allied Democratic Forces and the borders are secure and there is no need to worry.
These comments come at a time when the President of Kenya who is also the chairman of the East African Community, William Ruto promised to convene an extraordinary summit in the next 48 hours to chat a way forward after consulting the heads of states of the EAC member states on the escalating security crisis in the eastern DRC.
The latest information by the UN says hundreds of people are wounded and bodies are lying in the streets of Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and an upsurge in rape and gender-based violence, while civilians are fleeing “multiple active conflict zones”.
Foreign embassies are being targeted by angry crowds in the capital, Kinshasa. At least 17 foreign peacekeepers have now been killed in clashes with the rebels since M23 began fighting for control of Goma last week.
