The opposition Democratic Party (DP) has opened up applications for the Kawempe North by-elections to its members and challenged the Independent Electoral Commission to organize a free and fair election.
On Monday the EC released its roadmap for the by-election for the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat setting Thursday, March 13th 2025 as the polling day after it fell vacant following the demise of Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9th 2025.
The acting DP Spokesperson Ismail Kiirya while addressing journalists at the party offices at Mengo along Balintuma Road in Kampala disclosed that applications for the party flag are now open and currently they have received two applications on the Secretary General’s table but continues to encourage others who are interested in contesting in the by-election to formerly apply.
Meanwhile, Kiirya requested the EC to conduct a free and fair by-election for the Kawempe North MP seat and avoid mistakes that were witnessed in past by-elections in different parts of the country.
Kiirya says the police must keep law and order and not take over the roles of the Electoral Commission.
