The Ministry of Health has declared an outbreak of Ebola virus after a 32-year-old male nurse from Mulago National Referral Hospital was confirmed positive and later died of the relatively rare Sudan Virus disease.
Dr. Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary for the Health Ministry says his results were after verification from three National Reference Laboratories including the Central Public Health Laboratory in Kampala, the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe and Makerere University.
This marks the eighth Ebola outbreak in Uganda.
According to the Ministry, the victim sought treatment at multiple facilities and from a traditional healer in Mbale after presenting a five day high fever, chest pain and difficulty in breathing before his death at Mulago Hospital on Wednesday.
Atwine says that they have identified at least 44 contacts, and they have reactivated their task force team to administer the available vaccine doses to frontliners as the Government purchases another batch of doses.
Dr. Kasonde Mwinga, the Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Uganda assures Ugandans of total support towards combating the virus.
