The National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Commission has officially kicked off the screening process for aspiring candidates in the upcoming Kawempe North constituency by-election.
The screening of the 10 aspirants that started on Thursday is aimed at selecting a single flag bearer to contest against candidates from other political parties in the race to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant by Muhammad Ssegirinya’s untimely death on January 9th, 2025.
After this exercise, the Vetting Committee will proceed to select the suitable candidate after an open debate slated for Friday February 7th 2025 at the party headquarters at Makerere-Kavule, Kawempe Division in Kampala.
Shortly after being vetted, Umar Magala disclosed that he is very ready to receive the party card and will not run as an independent if not endorsed by the party.
He also advised his fellow contestants to respect the decision which will be reached by the party EC to promote party unity and discipline ahead of the highly contested by-election and creating more chances of defeating other parties’ candidates.
The 10 NUP members aspiring for the seat include; Umar Malaga, Elias LuyimbazI Nalukoola, Muhammad Luswa Luwemba, Eng. Kenneth Ssenkungu among others.
