Besigye’s firearms case: Prosecution seeks more time for phone evidence

Besigye’s firearms case

The prosecution, led by Richard Birivumbuka from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), has requested more time to continue investigations in the case where Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye faces charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as threatening national security.

Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, is jointly charged with Hajji Obeid Lutale and Captain Denis Ola of the UPDF Armored Brigade.

The case came up today before Nakawa Chief Magistrates’ Court, where the prosecution sought permission to extract more evidence from the accused persons’ mobile phones.

However, defense lawyers led by Erias Lukwago objected to the prosecution’s request, arguing for an adjournment to consult their clients.

Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi then set March 14, 2025, as the date to hear arguments on the prosecution’s request.

After the court session, Lukwago expressed frustration over what he termed as a deliberate delay in gathering evidence, questioning whether his clients would receive a fair trial. He vowed to continue fighting for their rights.

Besigye and his co-accused, who have been in custody since November 2024, will return to court on March 28, 2025, for further mention of the case.
