A total of 10,594 Registration Assistants have begun training, organized by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) at 21 regional centers across Uganda.
The four-day training program is aimed at equipping the assistants with the necessary skills and knowledge for the upcoming mass enrollmentand mass renewal of National Identity cards.
This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing effort to ensure that all eligible citizens are properly registered and that their identity documents are updated in time.
Rosemary Kisembo, the Executive Director of NIRA, urged the trainees to practice empathy when serving the public, emphasizing the importance of treating citizens with respect and kindness.
She noted that, as public servants, the Registration Assistants must make citizens feel welcomed and supported, as they they would wish to be treated.
Kisembo further stressed the role the assistants will play in the country’s overall national identity management system, stating that their work will help ensure accurate citizen registration and the smooth issuance of National ID cards.
These cards are vital for citizens’ access to various government services, including voting, healthcare, and banking.
Upon completing their training, the Registration Assistants will be deployed to every parish across the country to carry out tasks that include registering citizens for National Identification Numbers (NINs), issuing new National ID cards, and renewing expired IDs.
The assistants will be equipped to handle all the logistical and technical aspects of the registration process, ensuring that it is efficient and accurate.
This nationwide initiative aims to address the backlog of unregistered citizens and outdated identification documents, providing a more streamlined approach to national identification that will support social inclusion and economic development.
