Government agencies have been urged to prioritize tree planting as a key strategy for environmental conservation and mitigating the effects of global warming.
Speaking to journalists at Kyanja, George Odongo, the Landscape Supervisor at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), attributed Uganda’s prolonged drought to environmental degradation, including rampant deforestation and poor conservation practices.
Odongo emphasized that preserving forests and planting trees is a shared responsibility, crucial for ensuring a sustainable future.
His remarks were made during a tree-planting event at Kyanja Muslim Primary School in Nakawa Division, where KCCA joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of Forests, observed annually on March 21.
This year’s theme, “Forests and Food,” highlights the vital role forests play in food security and sustainable livelihoods.
Odongo revealed that KCCA aims to plant over 3,600 trees across the five divisions of Kampala.
Additionally, the authority is introducing the Green Infrastructure Ordinance for Kampala, pending gazetting, to combat environmental destruction in the city.
He further urged parents to educate young people on the importance of tree conservation to safeguard the environment for future generations.
