Karuma Bridge Closed for Rehabilitation Works

Karuma Bridge Closed

The Ministry of Works and Transport has closed Karuma Bridge, along the Kampala-Gulu highway, for further rehabilitation works.

The bridge, which was first closed in May 2024 due to structural defects and reopened in December after repairs, requires additional works to ensure its safety.

According to Allan Ssempebwa, Communication Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, the current closure will allow for the installation of expansion joints, among other critical repairs.

“The ministry has put in place diversion routes to minimize disruptions to traffic flow,” Ssempebwa explained. “Motorists traveling from Kampala to Gulu can divert at Lwenkunyi and use ferries at Masingi Port or divert at Pakwach and pass through Murchison Park.”

Ssempebwa apologized for the inconvenience caused by the closure and appreciated the public’s cooperation during this period. “We are committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of our infrastructure, and we appreciate the public’s understanding as we undertake these critical works.”
