Several African nations have been affected by sweeping tariffs announced by President Donald Trump on the US’ global trading partners.
Trump has imposed a minimum 10% tariff on all imports to the US, with additional “reciprocal tariffs” targeting 20 African countries.
Among the hardest hit are South Africa, with a 30% tariff, and Lesotho, which faces a 50% tariff. Other countries facing high tariffs include Madagascar (47%), Mauritius (40%), and Botswana (37%).
Nigerian exports will be subject to a 14% tariff.
Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal, and Liberia will all face the baseline 10% tariff on their exports to the US.
Trump justified the tariffs, stating that they were aimed at countries that “treat us badly.”
