Bishop Serverus Jjumba, the President of Caritas Uganda, has emphasized the importance of involving clients in round table discussions to generate innovative ideas for sustaining the organization amidst recent cuts in foreign donations.
This call to action comes in response to reductions in U.S. funding, which have impacted various operations of Caritas in Uganda.
During the opening of the 15th National Caritas Week Celebration 2025 at Kabale Diocese, the Bishop of Masaka highlighted the theme “Caritas empowering communities; for I was hungry and you gave me food,” drawn from Matthew 25:35.
He stressed the need for collaborative discussions that focus on identifying sustainable solutions to ensure the continued operation of Caritas Uganda.
His Grace Jjumba noted that by engaging directly with the community, Caritas can operate more effectively and with fewer challenges.
He urged the staff of Caritas across all Catholic dioceses to dedicate their efforts toward transforming lives, particularly in areas such as income generation, health, and environmental restoration.
Fr. Hillary Muheezangango, the National Director of Caritas Uganda, reassured that the organization has no plans to close due to the foreign donation cuts.
Instead, he indicated an intention to enhance its evangelization efforts, focusing on human dignity and working to lift communities out of poverty and adverse living conditions.
Caritas Uganda is the Catholic Church’s organization that facilitates long term sustainable solutions for socio-economic development through micro-financing and promotion of agricultural skills to help local communities in the country.
