The government has officially launched a baseline education census across the country, aimed at collecting crucial data on the number of learners and teachers in schools, from nursery through tertiary or university levels, as well as information on school infrastructures.
According to the Minister of State for Primary Education, Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, the data collection exercise commenced on 4th April 2025, starting with the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, which includes the districts of Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono.
Speaking to the press at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala on Thursday, Dr. Kaducu noted that the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES), is conducting the education census.
Following the completion of data collection in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, the exercise will roll out to the rest of the country at the beginning of the second term, continuing until 30th June 2025.
Dr. Kaducu stated that the census will encompass both government and private institutions and will play a vital role in informing the national planning process, monitoring school performance, identifying the number of students receiving education, and facilitating the development of the education sector.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Sports has appealed to heads of schools and local government authorities to cooperate with enumerators to ensure the smooth running of the exercise.
