Makerere University Guild President, Churchill James Ssentamu, has addressed the recent controversy involving photographs circulating on social media that feature him with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The images have ignited a public debate, with many interpreting them as an indication of James’ allegiance to the President, thus inciting criticism from supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine.
The backlash intensified as James’ father, Fred Nyanzi, who is also Robert Kyagulanyi’s brother and a notable figure in the NUP, publicly expressed his disappointment and anger.
He called on Churchill James to apologize to Ugandans for what he perceives as a betrayal and to consider resigning from his position as Guild President.
In response to the uproar, Ssentamu addressed the media at Makerere University, clarifying that the photographs were taken during his official duties as Guild President at the launch of the Research and Innovation Week on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
He emphasized that the meeting had no political implications and should not be viewed as a statement of political affiliation.
Despite the controversy, Ssentamu remained committed to prioritizing student welfare, academic reforms, and service delivery during his tenure.
He expressed determination to focus on issues that directly impact the student body, reaffirming his role as a representative for all students at Makerere University.
