Catholics Flock to Churches to Observe Holy Thursday

Christians worldwide observed Holy Thursday

As Christians worldwide observed Holy Thursday, they entered a pivotal moment in the journey of Holy Week.

This day not only commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with His Apostles but also marks the beginning of the Paschal Triduum.

For Catholics, Holy Thursday is a time for deep reflection on core spiritual practices, particularly expressed through the celebration of the Chrism Mass.

On this day, many bishops conducted the Chrism Mass, a ceremonial event where they consecrate Holy Chrism and bless the oils used in sacraments.

In the Kampala Archdiocese, the Chrism Mass began at 10 a.m., coinciding with the renewal of priestly commitments.

This ritual serves as a reminder of priests’ dedication and the communal responsibility to uphold the values of the faith.

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Siita, Coordinator of the Justice and Peace Department in the Kampala Archdiocese, emphasized the importance of using the remaining days of Lent for introspection and personal growth.

He encourages Christians to engage in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, while also urging them to reflect on their relationships and commitment to living authentically as followers of Christ.

This holistic approach fosters a deeper connection to one’s faith during this sacred time.

As Lent draws to a close, preparations are underway for special observances on Good Friday.

The Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) will host an ecumenical Way of the Cross at the Old Kampala playgrounds.

This event will feature prominent leaders from various Christian denominations, including His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala; Most Rev. Dr. Steven Kaziimba, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda; and His Eminence Jeronymos Muzeeyi from the Orthodox Church.

Centered around the theme of urgent supplication, “Lord, save us; we are lost/perishing” (Matthew 8:25), this gathering embodies unity and shared faith as Christians navigate the profound events of Holy Week together.
